Lottery Funds a Boon to BC Coaches

Vancouver, BC - Recently announced funding for amateur sports generated by the SportsFunder lottery will have a huge positive impact on the quality of coaching in the province, according to the Coaches Association of BC (CABC).

"This money will provide the financial support needed to make training and professional development accessible to all coaches," says CABC Executive Director Gord May. "Our athletes deserve to be guided, encouraged and taught by well-trained coaches.

May says the CABC will be in charge of disbursing $250,000 of the total $1.5 million in funding for amateur sports announced recently by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation. The funds will help defray the costs of training towards certification with the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP), specifically for regional, female, aboriginal and Paralympic sports coaches. Coaches in outlying regions, where it was previously not feasible to offer a course because of low registration numbers, will now have easier access to NCCP training. There will be an emphasis on subsidizing the education of coaches who train athletes in BC Games and Canada Games sports. The details of how the funding will be distributed will be finalized in the coming weeks, says May.

The Coaches Association of BC is the voice for all coaches in 66 sports province wide. By improving the quality of coaches at all levels through professional development, certification and ongoing education, the CABC fosters a positive and meaningful experience for athletes at all levels.
