Canada fields
four teams for inaugural Pan American Youth Championships
OTTAWA- Canada has
two entries in both men’s and women’s competition for the
inaugural Pan American Water Polo Youth Championships scheduled for
January 7-16 in Mexico City.
"This is a great experience for these kids and we’ll have
representation from across Canada," said Jon Clarke of
Montreal, assistant coach on the national women’s youth team.
"It puts on par with the Europeans who have been able to
develop their young players through the European youth
championships."
In men’s play, the Canada East team is comprised of Marc Tanguay,
Alex Moggridge and Phillip Sonea of Ottawa, Dusko Dakic, Sasa
Stevanovic and Edwardo Montes, all of Gatineau, Que., Devon Diggle,
Andrew Robinson and Justin Leach of Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Que.,
Trevor Robinson of Scarborough, Ont., Rami Helali of Kitchener,
Ont., and Stefan Djordjevic of Toronto.
The Canada West team members are Mike Wenzlawe, Igor Koracin, Taylor
Singleton-Fookes and Jordan Sumszko, all of Calgary, Matt Gore and
Andy Chow of Coquitlam, B.C., Ryan Noramn, Taso Harbis and Greg
Korpan, all of Regina, Gavin Jones of Vancouver, Jesse Hill of
Winnipeg and Jessie Ory of Saanich, B.C.
Andras Szeri of Ottawa is the head coach of the men’s national
youth team.
In women’s play Canada Red players are Ellen Rafferty, Emily
Csikos and Lauren Cann, all of Calgary, Julie Bélanger and Aicha
Bouharira of Montreal, Saara Majuri and Candice Philipe, of
Vancouver, Casey Pottier of Kitchener, Maralyn Gagnier of
Dollard-des-Ormeaux, and Carly Proulx of Winnipeg.
Canada White is comprised of Marissa Janssens, Kristin Harmidy and
Marisa Kelley of Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Elizabeth Pannell and Kelsey
Campbell of Vancouver, Heather Carson of Winnipeg, Noémie Lafortune
of Montreal, Valérie Lessard of Ottawa, Anne Nisiewicz of Toronto
and Shannel Rajan of Calgary.
Alison Davis of Ottawa is the head coach of the women’s national
youth team.
"Our players are really going to learn a lot in the pool but
also out the pool, in terms of travelling and how to prepare for
international games," said Clarke. "It’s hard to make a
prediction but we definitely would like to come home with a
medal."
The tournament features players aged 17 and under. Other countries
entered include the hosts Mexicans, the U.S., and Brazil. The full
tournament schedule will be announced later this week.
