FINA Approves New Water Polo Ball

Irvine, CA, April 8, 2005—The traditional yellow water polo ball has been given a facelift by Mikasa, the official ball supplier of FINA, the world governing body for aquatics, and USA Water Polo, the national governing body for water polo in the U.S. The new design includes panels of blue, complementing a different, brighter shade of yellow.

The new model was recently named as the official ball for all FINA competitions and will be used at this summer’s FINA World League games and FINA World Championships in Montreal, Canada.

The new ball will soon be available for National Teams to use in men’s (W6000C) and women’s (W6009C) models.

“Mikasa is excited to give the traditional water polo ball a more exciting look,” said Mikasa Director of Marketing Jordan Poznick. “Mikasa wants to continue to advance the game of water polo by producing the best balls manufactured. Aside from just looking great, the new balls have the added benefits of shot recognition for goalkeepers, spin practice for shooters and easier ball identification for referees and fans. The new ball will also resonate better during TV coverage.”

USWP Director of High Performance and Men’s National Team Head Coach Guy Baker is already a fan of the new ball.

“I think this gives water polo something new and fun,” said Baker. “It might not revolutionize the game but it’s definitely a great new change.”
