BC takes Silver and Bronze at Youth Cup

BC brought home silver and bronze medals from the Youth Cup Championship played July 23 - 28 in Montreal. The best youth (18 and under) players converged on Dollard des Ormeaux for Water Polo Canada's Youth Cup. It was the first time in 10 years the championship tournament has been played.

The Women's gold medal game saw BC 1 pitted against Quebec 1. Strong and evenly matched Quebec pulled ahead in the last quarter and took the game 7 - 5. "Overall we played a strong game. We had several opportunities but we didn't finish them", said co captain Kerry Kaukinen of North Vancouver. Carmen Eggens of Pitt Meadows had another take, "We [Quebec and BC] are always in finals together-it's just a mental thing-today we didn't have it." Eggens and Saanich's Erika Brown were named tournament All Stars.
Kaukinen and Eggens were off to a selection and development camp following the Youth Cup. Both are members of the Junior National team.

"We started off slow-as the tournament progressed we improved", said the Captain of the Men's BC1 team Con Kudaba. "We should have been in the gold, but our first 2 losses cost us. The bronze final was one of the best games of the tournament-we started to play together as a team." The BC1 Men took the bronze medal in a 11-6 win against Quebec.

BC also sent a Jr. Men's and Women's team to the Championship, both BC 2 Men's and BC 2 Women's placed 6th overall.
