Western
Youth Girls Training and Selection Camp
The
Western Youth Girls Training and Selection Camp was held
October 13 - 15, 2006 in Vancouver, B.C. Thirty two
girls attended representing 4 western clubs; Bushido,
Tsunami, Renegades and Pacific Storm. Coaches James
Gardiner, Jeff Lindell and John Stockdale created a
format that challenged and evaluated the athletes and
provided many opportunities for skill development, one
on one coaching and game experience.
The 3 day camp was productive and insightful. "We
came to understand how talented and deep the West is in
regards to all positions. Athletes showed themselves to
be really dedicated and willing to take feedback and
instructions that are different than their clubs
provide", said Gardiner.
The highly motivated and hard working youth girls,
focused on strategy and tactics as well as building
strong basic skills. "There's nothing more
important than body position and passing!!!" was
the consistent message from Lindell. Participants also
heard from sports trainer and former Jr. Nat team member
Curtis Christopherson about the importance of water polo
specific weight training and strengthening.
"Successful and well run", stated John
Stockdale at the camp's close.
His words echoed the sentiments of both coaches and
athletes. Thanks are extended to Edmonton Tsunami's
Darko Slankamenac who offered specialized goaltender
coaching and refereeing throughout the camp, BC parents
for their tremendous support and Western Camp Manager
Robyn Campbell for outstanding organization.
