Stanford
Wins B.C.'s Women take Silver in BC OPEN Championship
Vancouver, B.C. - The Stanford Women reclaimed the BC OPEN
water polo crown over the weekend, for the second straight
year. In a gold medal game that pitted Stanford against
BC's Storm Women a hard fought battle was expected as both
teams proved strong throughout the tournament remaining
undefeated. Then in what could only be described as
heartbreaking, Saara Majuri, one of the key members of the
B.C. squad was called on a misconduct and kicked out of
the game in the first 3 minutes of play. It proved to be a
major setback. At the end of the second quarter Storm was
down 8 - 1. But the B.C. women dug in and finished the
game with a score of 10 - 5, winning the last 2 quarters.
The recovery came too late-the BC Women took silver.
Storm's
Monika Eggens and Athina Vazeos were named to the All Star
team.

game saw B.C.'s Storm Cadet girls battle Portland's
T-Hills team. Storm took the gold in a balanced team
effort and with a final score of 13-8. Coach James
Gardiner said, "The cadets are progressing well…when
we go to the National Championships we can expect an
excellent Storm style of play". Coach John Stockdale
added, "I was impressed by how much the subs improved
within the framework of the tournament...they are starting
to show they are ready to play at this level of
competition".
