Athletes take Top Honours at Alberta Open
Vancouver,
B.C. - B.C. athletes took several top awards at the Alberta
Open Water Polo Tournament held over the weekend in Calgary.
Victoria
Smith of Fraser Valley Water Polo led her team to a Bantam
Girl's (U14) gold medal and received MVP honours. Pacific
Storm's Kirstn Mase scored a record 9 goals in the Cadet Girls
(U16) final, secured gold for her team and nabbed the MVP
title for Cadet Girls. Mase said following the win, "I'm
glad we won-we played well. The last game was tense, we were
down and we came back. It feels good." Saara Majuri also
playing for Pacific Storm was named tournament MVP in the
Youth Girls (U18) category. Majuri added, "it feels
great--we did it as a team".
The Cora
Campbell Award for female athletes and the Mikhail Dykman
Award for male athletes are awarded to one member of each team
who demonstrates excellent work ethic, willingness to fill any
role on the team, exemplifying leadership and most importantly
sportsmanship.
