Water Polo Opportunities
In the
past B.C athletes have gone outside of the province to
play waterpolo in university competition after
graduating from high school. Mike Wilmink, UCLA,
Kaliya Young, U.C. Berkeley, Ryan Bayzely, UOP, Marci
Wright, Hartwick College, Kristy Streefkerk Indiana,
to name a few polo graduates. But this year there are
more BC athletes playing for their university in
official conferences. Laura Shaw and Brook Ruffo are
playing in the OUAA for the University of Toronto.
Kelsey Campbell (Indiana), Saara Majuri (Hawaii), Carmen
Eggens (Hawaii) and Candice Phillippe (Arizona State)
will all be competing in the NCAA in January.
Mixing
athletics and academics is a trend that our B.C. coaches
would like to see continue. "As our athletes peak
for international play in their mid to late twenties,
any opportunity for them to continue with their post
secondary goals while playing competitive waterpolo is a
bonus!' says John Stockdale. "We just wish that
there were competitive opportunities like this in
British Columbia." UBC, SFU and U Vic have long
standing recreational clubs and if they could make the
transition to varsity sports, we would find a number of
B.C. athletes ready to play here at home.
A
number of athletes are already beginning talks with NCAA
and OUAA schools for next season. We will keep you up to
date with the signings and with the accomplishments of
our university athletes in their competitive seasons.
Thumbs up to those who pursue both athletic and academic
excellence! |
