AIX-LA-PROVENCE, France- Canada won the silver medal Sunday at the six-country French Open men’s water polo tournament.

The Canadians, ranked 14th in the world, lost the championship game 9-6 to top-seeded and 12th ranked Romania on Sunday.

Jean Sayegh and Benjamin Poulin, both of Montreal, scored two goals apiece with singles to Kevin Mitchell and Iain Lark, both of Vancouver. The Canadians trailed only 5-4 at the half but the Romanians scored three unanswered goals in the third quarter.

The Canadians won two of their three matches in this tournament. They opened with a 5-1 win over Egypt, the only team in the competition headed to the Olympics, and beat France 6-5 on Saturday.

"We controlled the game for three of four quarters," said Dragan Jovanovic in his tournament debut as head coach of the Canadian team. "This is a good start for us. It shows we’re on the right track but also that we have a lot of work ahead."

France beat Turkey for the bronze medal while Poland beat Egypt for fifth.
