Canada wins
silver medal at French Open men’s water polo tournament.

AIX-LA-PROVENCE, France- Canada won
the silver medal Sunday at the six-country French Open men’s water
polo tournament.
The Canadians, ranked 14th in the
world, lost the championship game 9-6 to top-seeded and 12th ranked
Romania on Sunday.
Jean Sayegh and Benjamin Poulin,
both of Montreal, scored two goals apiece with singles to Kevin
Mitchell and Iain Lark, both of Vancouver. The Canadians trailed
only 5-4 at the half but the Romanians scored three unanswered goals
in the third quarter.
The Canadians won two of their
three matches in this tournament. They opened with a 5-1 win over
Egypt, the only team in the competition headed to the Olympics, and
beat France 6-5 on Saturday.
"We controlled the game for
three of four quarters," said Dragan Jovanovic in his
tournament debut as head coach of the Canadian team. "This is a
good start for us. It shows we’re on the right track but also that
we have a lot of work ahead."
France beat Turkey for the bronze
medal while Poland beat Egypt for fifth.
