Gore….Aiming for the top
An 8 year old
Matt Gore dove into the pool and played his first game of
water polo. He emerged not exhausted but pumped, "When's
the next game? I want to score", he announced. Now 16 the
fire in Matt's eyes and the intensity with which he speaks of
water polo is even more apparent. "The idea that I might
one day get to play on the Senior National team and possibly
even go to the Olympics keeps me motivated" he recently
said. That goal might not be too far off, last year he was
named Outstanding Male Cadet of 2004 by BC Water Polo and
selected to Canada's Youth National team.
The honour
role student who plans for a career in science or engineering
may have to put those plans on hold as he readies for the
opportunity to compete against athletes from all over the
world. His eyes intent as he aims for the top.
Keep on
playing no matter what….
The intensity that fuels Matt's game was evident this May at
the Juvenile Nationals. In the gold medal game which pitted
Pacific Storm against Quebec's DDO, Matt had his finger
wrenched and twisted, he ignored the 'discomfort' and went on
to be the leading goal scorer in the game. Later, he addressed
the injury and found the finger was not only badly broken but
would require surgery, resetting with pins, a cast and a 6
week healing (no activity) period. No problem….the
championship title had been secured! Matt spent his
recuperation coaching Coquitlam's summer water polo teams.
Matt lives
with his family in Coquitlam. He has just completed grade 11
at Dr. Charles Best Secondary and is on the school's honour
role.
