Sue Gardiner is Hooked on Water Polo
A 2 time
Olympian, Sue Gardiner is Hooked on Water Polo.
Called the most physically demanding of all sports B.C.'s
Gardiner has risen through the ranks to become not just a
dominant force on the Canadian Senior Women's team but one of
the top players in the world.
She stepped
into the water polo pool 10 years ago as a strong swimmer, but
it was her dedication and willingness to work that soon set
her apart. "An athlete's work ethic is the biggest thing…it
doesn't matter how talented you are... you have to work. From
the beginning I told myself work harder….try harder. I
always think there is more I can do more I can learn. I'm
still learning."
Speaking with
characteristic candor, honesty and openness Sue talked about
the fragile balance of confidence that exists in each athlete
and how every path has its share of challenges,
disappointments, surprises and detours. "Finding a
personal balance point so you don't soar with success and
crash with disappointment but remain steady throughout it is
key", she explains.
At the end of
each competitive season Sue returns home, settling back in
with her North Vancouver family and commuting to UBC where she
is working towards a degree in science. To BC's water polo
community she is the ultimate role model and champion.
Passionate about the sport and completely invested in seeing
others succeed, she can regularly be found in the pool
imparting technique, sharing stories of hard work, winning and
losing, fear and confidence and always being open to learn.
