| Laura
Shaw…Lefty with a Killer Shot.
A moment in
time that will always be remembered---Juvie Nationals 2006, in
an intense final game against Quebec powerhouse DDO, Laura
Shaw's killer left shot snaps into the net, breaks the 5-5 tie
and puts the Storm Girls into the lead. A lead they would hold
until the final whistle. Laura explodes out of the water fist
clenched in victory. It was an exclamation point, punctuating
her 6th and last National Championship before graduating from
high school and heading off to University.
First
impression would have you believe that Laura is quiet and
unassuming. HA! Laura is described by friends as funny (a
wicked sense of humour), independent (very comfortable in her
own skin) and honest (no sugar coating here…she'll tell you
exactly what she thinks). An honour role student she will
graduate from Dr. Charles Best Secondary in June.
At this
important juncture you get the sense that a new chapter is
just beginning. The University of Toronto is hoping to
strengthen their Women's Water Polo team by adding Laura to
their Fall roster. Academically she's focused on a career in
journalism or something "media related".
You know that
water polo will always be a part of her life. "I love the
game. I love the intensity, speed and the challenge of having
to find a quick solution. That's all the motivation I
need." Laura's goal was to, "win Juvie National this
year and leave on a 'good' note". Mission Accomplished!
