Regan - Loves the Game
Baseball, of
all sports, was the one that opened up a whole new world for
Tanner Regan. It's been six years since the Earl Marriott
honor role student got his first taste of water polo, at the
urging of a friend he met through baseball.
"My baseball friend dragged me out to a practice,"
Regan recalls. "I came to my first practice because my
friend enjoyed it and soon I grew to like it as well."
Recollections
of his first game are dim, in fact, his most persistent memory
is that those early teams struggled - but not so much that it
dampened his enthusiasm for the new game. "All I know is
that for the first three years we would be happy if we scored
a goal in a game."
He likes the
physical aspect of the sport, and also enjoys scoring goals -
although he hit the post two years in a row in gold medal
shootout games.
He says water polo reminds him of football. "It is very
physical like football, but requires a much higher level of
skill. My motivation comes from enjoying the game and wanting
to play more".
He's on the
honor role at Mariott, and looking forward to a career that
involves math or science, such as engineering. For now,
inspired by his enthusiasm for water polo he works part-time
as a lifeguard at community pools in Surrey and Ladner. For
the past four years, he's been a member of Pacific Storm, and
hopes to win a gold medal at the 2008 youth national
tournament.
