Andrew started playing water polo when he was 8 years old. He had to pester the coaches to let him practice with the team in Coquitlam because in 1983 they did not let 8 year old kids participate. Andrew remained persistent and worked hard until he was finally allowed to join the team. He loved the sport and would play for anyone, anywhere, and at any time. He would often play for other teams if some of their players did not show up for tournaments. When he was older, he played with the Vancouver Men's Team if they were short players. He was a member of the Coquitlam Sharks, Burnaby Barracudas, Simon Fraser University Team, and the B C Junior Men's Team.

Andrew had great enthusiasm for the game of water polo. He worked hard to stay in shape and never missed a practice. He quit all other sports to concentrate on water polo. He worked many part-time jobs to earn money to pay for water polo trips and maintained an Honour Roll standing in school. Andrew was killed in a tragic accident as a passenger in a friend’s car when he was 16 years old. A Memorial Fund in Andrew’s name has been made available for players who exhibit Andrew’s love for the game and his dedication to hard work at practices, games and at tournaments.

An annual disbursement will be made from this fund to high-performance athletes that are in the Youth (U18) age category and demonstrate enthusiasm, spirit, dedication to hard work and love for the game. It is intended that this award be utilized to offset travel costs associated with high-performance participation. BCWP’s Board of Directors, in consultation with team coaches, will recommend potential recipients of this award to Andrew’s parents. Andrew's parents make the final decision on the award recipient.

Andrew Hunt Memorial Award - 2009

On Thursday, July 9th Coquitlam hosted the Andrew Hunt Tournament to commemorate the life of Andrew and his water polo achievements. The tournament was a full day and very successful with many P2 teams attending the from throughout the lower mainland. Mr. & Mrs. Hunt presented the award to Cody Dodds, an outstanding young man and a very accomplished athlete that plays for the Fraser Valley Water Polo Club.
